The Momeo Guide

How to actually unwind

By the Momeo team · Updated May 2026

The UK does spa days properly. Champneys built the first health resort in Britain in 1925. Bannatyne now runs more than thirty city and country spas. Pennyhill Park has a 45,000 square foot spa with twenty thermal experiences in one building. Calcot in the Cotswolds has an outdoor hot tub by a log fire that genuinely works in February. Each one is a different kind of day, and a different kind of person.

The difference between a good spa day and a great one comes down to three decisions. Which spa. Which length. Which day of the week.

The great ones aren’t about the treatment. They’re about the time around it. The hour in the thermal suite before. The slow lunch after. The walk in dressing gowns between the steam room and the outdoor hot tub when the air is cold and the water is not. The bit where you stop checking your phone because there’s nothing on it that matters more than the next half hour.

The lineup

Best UK spas by mood

Choose the spa that matches the day you want. Each tier is shaped by depth of experience, time spent, and how the in-between moments feel.

01

For a relaxed afternoon

Bannatyne Health Club & Spa

Over thirty UK locations

The most accessible name in UK spa days. Spa days from around £60, full pool and thermal access, easy to book at short notice in most major cities.

Champneys City Spa

London

Champneys quality without the country house drive. Half-day treatment-led packages in a quiet Belgravia setting, ideal for a London afternoon off.

02

For a full day of indulgence

Champneys Tring

Hertfordshire

The original Champneys, a 1925 Georgian manor in 170 acres. Nine hours of spa access, lunch included, the full health-resort experience without staying overnight.

Pennyhill Park

Bagshot, Surrey

A 45,000 square foot spa with over twenty thermal experiences. The closest thing the UK has to a continental thermal bath complex. Day spa packages from around £150.

03

For an overnight retreat

Calcot & Spa

Tetbury, Cotswolds

A 14th-century manor in 220 acres of Cotswolds countryside. Outdoor hot tub, log fire, two pools. The country-house spa weekend at its most quietly excellent.

Lime Wood

New Forest, Hampshire

The Herb House Spa with indoor and outdoor hydro pools, woodland-view sauna, and treatments using Bamford and Voya. The destination retreat for a milestone weekend.

UK spa day at a country house hotel — Momeo personalised keepsake gift

When to book

Best time of year to book

Best window

Feb — Mar

Spas are quiet after the post-Christmas rush, midweek rates drop, and the contrast between a cold UK morning and a warm thermal suite is genuinely the point. Same booking in July gives you the same treatment without the same payoff.

Avoid

Late Dec — Jan

Spas run at full capacity for gift redemptions, treatment slots fill up, and the staff are tired. Same money, worse day.

Underrated

Sep — Oct

Autumn afternoons, cold enough for the sauna to feel like the right idea, warm enough to use an outdoor hot tub without rushing back inside. Country house spas are at their best in this window and most still hold summer pricing.

Field notes

Five tips for the day itself

Practical advice from the Momeo team. Tap any tip to read more.

  1. Arrive ninety minutes early

The thermal facilities are the spa. The treatment is the bonus. Most people arrive fifteen minutes before their massage and leave twenty minutes after. Arrive ninety minutes before the treatment slot, change, and use the pool, sauna and steam room first. The body relaxes in stages, and the treatment lands deeper when the body is already there.

  2. Choose a massage over a facial for a first spa day

Facials are quieter and more technical. Massages are physical and immediate. If the recipient hasn’t had a treatment in years, a 60-minute Swedish or deep tissue is the more memorable choice. Move to facials, body wraps and signature treatments on a second visit when expectations are calibrated.

  3. Book midweek if possible

A Tuesday or Wednesday spa day is a different experience from a Saturday one. Quieter pool. Quieter relaxation room. Faster treatment slots. Many spas charge twenty to forty per cent less for the same package on weekdays. The gift voucher rarely specifies the day, so the recipient gets the choice.

  4. Bring less than you think

Most UK spas provide robes, slippers, towels and basic toiletries. A swimsuit and a hairbrush is genuinely all that’s needed. Heavy bags ruin the in-between moments, which are the moments that matter. Leave the laptop at home. Leave the phone in the locker.

  5. Stay for lunch

The food at a good UK spa is unusually thoughtful. Champneys, Calcot and Pennyhill Park all serve proper menus designed around the day, not a sandwich shoved between treatments. Build it in. The slow lunch in a dressing gown is part of why the day is the day.

They provide the experience.
We transform it into a gift worth giving.
